top dog analysis: renaissance art
The Renaissance was one of the most important influences of European art history. The time period ran from 1350-1550, and the artistic influences were most concentrated in Italy, although there was some in Northern Europe as well.
The renaissance, also known as the rebirth, was an era of revival of the old classics. Artists began focusing on old texts and ancient philosophers to influence their paintings, sculptures, and literature.
The lasting effect of the renaissance on art included some major art techniques. During the renaissance period, artists introduced chiaroscuro, balance of proportions, and most importantly, perspective. One example of perspective in use in a renaissance art piece is in Pietro Perugino’s fresco, the Sistine Chapel. Chiaroscuro is the use of drastic contrasts in highlights or lowlights. An excellent example of chiaroscuro in a painting is Giovanni Baglione’s Sacred and Profane Love.
Renaissance art was influenced by humanism. In southern Europe in Italy, Christian Humanism made the art in that area greatly influenced and inspired by religious scenes, since it was right by the center of Catholicism in the Vatican City. Renaissance art in northern European nations was influenced by normal humanism. Northern renaissance art was influenced by Italian art, but didn’t develop until later on in the renaissance, when Albrecht Durer visited Italy and brought the techniques back home up north.
As a result of all of the techniques that were developed from the renaissance periods, it was one of the most important eras of art in European history. Renaissance was important because of the foundation for further art development that it created.
