Q: Contrast the ways in which the paintings shown express the artistic and intellectual concerns of the eras in which the works were created.
Artists always tend to pick controversial subjects of their time as inspirations to begin their work. Raphael’s School of Athens (1509-1511) and Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) both focus strongly on concerns during their time period. Raphael’s painting was most likely inspired by the neoplatonism that he was painting in. Rapheal was a renaissance painter who was focusing in humanism that was very popular at the time, focusing on ancient works and philosophers. In School of Athens, the setting is the Vatican Palace. In the painting, famous philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle are conversing. Surrounding the famous philosophers are smaller groups of thinkers. Some of the faces include famous artists and philosophers of Raphael’s time, as well as himself. A possibility to why he included their faces in the paintings is that the renaissance was a restoration of old classics, and since his coworkers were restoring the classics they were similar to the famous philosophers, and thus, he included them in his painting. Raphael was clearly influenced by the Neoplatism and Renaissance time era that he was painting in.
Pablo Picasso’s art was most likely influenced by the extreme imperialism of his time. Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 and died in 1973. Imperialism began in the 1870s and continued through the 20th century. The European “scramble for Africa” occurred between 1881-1914. Picasso painted Les Demoiselles d’Avignon in 1907, right in the middle of the scramble for Africa. In his painting, there are five women who are in a brothel. In the painting, Picasso integrates African influences such as tribal masks and patterns. Picasso’s painting became one of the most controversial paintings of the Imperialism time era.
Some of the most famous art in history is influenced by a controversial issue or influence of the time era the artist was designing in; for Raphael, his influence was the renaissance, for Picasso, it was imperialism.
