World War I and the Russian Revolution
In the summer of 1914, all European nations joined into a massive war. As a result of experiencing many short wars from the years before, Europeans willingly jumped into World War I, thinking that the boys would "be home for Christmas." The First World War was one of the most destructive, economically depressing wars in European history. It resulted in many casualties in war, and caused many famines at home. Women experienced temporary freedom as they were allowed more rights for finding work, since most of the males were off at war. New warfare strategies, such as trench warfare, were created at the fronts. During the World War, many countries began to internally crack under pressure. Russia experienced revolutions in the early 1900s as a result of unhappy and starving citizens. The Russian Revolution led to an extremely communist government, which was a bridge into future totalitarian regimes.
