1945: United States extends economic relief program, the Marshall Plan, to Western bloc in Europe
1949: Stalin and the Soviets launch the Council For Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON) in response to the Marshall Plan
1949: United States forms the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) with western Europe
1957: European Economic Community, also known as the Common Market, is founded by France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg
